Is This Thing On?
Curated by Aaron Walker and Jordan Tate
Contemporary Art Center of Cincinnati

A three-part, video art and new media survey at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, OH, Is This Thing On? was divided into three phases, each with their own thematic thread and lineup of artists:

1- Screen Test seeks to trace the lineage of performance video from early Portapak experiments to contemporary online and new media trends. Largely, Screen Test, showcases the effects of this developing technology through the processes fundamental to the media of video art.

2- Quality Control continues the process-based dialog inherent in the understanding of developing technology through a playful exploration of medium. By looking at artists engaged in process-based works that explore the capabilities of video within an experimental context, Quality Control functions as an inquiry into the function, possibility, and role of video art in a contemporary video and new media context.

3- Buoyed by the investigations of Quality Control, New forms looks at work that challenges the notion of the 2-dimensional, time based video work. The final phase of Is This Thing On? utilizes notions from both previous phases in order to posit a direction for the future of combined media works and challenge our assumptions of both the form and function of contemporary video art.
